Poverty in Australia is the inability to have access to the essentials of life. It’s about not having enough money to eat decent meals. Poverty is not being able to take your kids to the doctor or dentist.
It means standing in supermarket queues, quietly praying that you’ve added up your handful of items correctly. If you haven’t, you’ll face the embarrassment of having to put something back. Poverty is about always saying “no” to school camps and excursions. It means standing in the rain waiting for buses that never run on time.
Poverty means having your name on an endless government list for somewhere safe to live. It means that other people make decisions about your life most of the time.
UnitingCare agencies across Victoria and Tasmania are reporting their clients are experiencing increased cost of living pressures as a result of the disproportionate impact of the cost of the rental market, transport, education and health on low income households.
The demand is unprecedented with more people living on the poverty line and our community services are under pressure to find more money each year to maintain vital programs.
