Homelessness

When most people think of ‘the homeless’ they picture a middle-aged unshaven man living on the streets.

The face of homelessness has changed though with UnitingCare agencies assisting individuals and families who are either homeless or at risk of becoming homeless due to a financial emergency, domestic crisis or eviction from private rental due to the rising costs.

The crisis response provided by UnitingCare homelessness services includes purchasing crisis motel accommodation, rent in arrears and advance grants, food vouchers, personal hygiene packages, swags, canned goods, bread, clothing, furniture, pharmaceuticals, transport costs, utility payments, toys and free cooked meals for the homeless.

Many of the families that our agencies see on a daily basis have nowhere to go that night and/or no means of feeding the family or purchasing urgent medications as needed.
